“From Henri Nouwen”

Recently, I signed up for a daily devotion from Henri Nouwen – an author, professor, and pastor who wrote numerous books about spending time with God, contemplation, and prayer. The devotion yesterday was about understanding time spent with God not as wasted time, but as essential. It touched me and I share it with you with the hope it will touch you too.

Blessings, Chris

“Waste Some Time With God”

In our utilitarian culture, where we suffer from a collective compulsion to do something practical, helpful, or useful, and where we feel compelled to make a contribution that can give us a sense of worth, contemplative prayer is a form of radical criticism. It is not useful or practical. It is simply to waste time with God. It cuts a hole in our busyness and reminds us and others that it is God and not we who creates and sustains the world.

Worship This Week

This Sunday we conclude our “There’s No Place Like Home” message series. This week’s message is titled “Returning Home.” Our Scripture focus will be from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 15, verses 11-24.

Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in the whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate.

Our services will begin with the song People Like Us, by Micah Tyler. Our opening hymn will be God of Grace and God of Glory, followed by In Christ Alone and Victory In Jesus. Our choir will bring the song Sing For Joy, as our prelude at the 10:20 service.

Virtual Worship Information

In addition to in-person worship, our service will be live-streamed. The service can be viewed on our Facebook Page.  The service will start at approximately 10:25 am following our Gathering Song.  Additionally, we post a recording of our messages to our website by early Sunday afternoon.
